摘要

ON THE NAVAJO NATION, AN ESTIMATED 37,000PEOPLE lack access to indoor plumbing (Figure 1). The Navajo Indian Reservationwas established in 1868. Since then, through the powerof Navajo advocacy, the Navajo Nation has grown tocover more than 27,000 square miles and is the largestland-based tribe in the United States . The states of Arizona,New Mexico, and Utah each reach into the Nation,as each state was created after 1868. The Navajo Nation is a sovereign nationand values a government-to-government status withthe United States government.
