While Indonesia will be able to absorb the economic impact of the earthquake and tsunami,rebuilding Aceh will be a challenge.The local petrochemicals industry faces another challenge-convincing investors that it is time to expand.Malini Hariharan assesses the situation.With the world still trying to digest the scale of devastation caused by the recent earthquake and tsunami in Aceh,Indonesia,it is hard to narrow focus to the country's petrochemical industry.The disaster claimed over a 100 000 lives,wrecked infrastructure and is estimated to have cost the country USUS4.5bn.There is still some confusion on the death toll,with the health ministry assessing it at 166 320 while the social affairs ministry has estimated that 114 978 people died.But it may so happen that the exact number will never be known.
