Taiwan has been making moves towards a closer relationship with China even as economic imperatives reduce the possibility of a conflict.Relations between Taiwan and China are once again under the spotlight,with both sides making symbolic overtures to get closer even while dodging the issue of full unification.Taiwan's main opposition party is talking of direct flights to the mainland during the Lunar New Year,but has so far received a lukewarm response from the Chinese side.The Taiwanese government has indicated its willingness to relax an investment ban in some high-tech areas.Cracker projects on the mainland have been informally approved although it is not clear when official approval would be forthcoming.Recently,China's Minister of Communications proposed what would surely be an engineering miracle - a highway between Beijing and Taipei by 2030.
