BASF showcased a new gas storage technology called metal organic frameworks, or MOFs, at the recent Alternative Clean Transportation Expo that could expand the market for natural gas vehicles in the United States by increasing fuel tank capacity or lowering fueling infrastructure costs. According to BASF and Ford, which incorporated the system in an F-550 truck on display at the show, the same amount of natural gas that requires 3,600 psi of pressure in a traditional tank could be stored at a much lower pressure in a tank filled with MOFs. This would allow fuel to be stored in less bulky tanks, reducing fueling infrastructure capital and operating costs for a fleet owner relying on its own fueling station.
