Top dressing is basically an economical material spread atop the soil in your pot or dish garden that can be turkey grit, pea gravel, aquarium gravel, colored glass chips, or any material that is not organic or able to decompose. Typically it is W thick or more to prevent any soil showing or being exposed during watering or a good rain.
