Kanjli is a man-made, freshwater wetland located at 31°113′ N latitude and 75°12′ E longitude, occupying an area of about 0.3 km~2 in the Kapurthala district of Punjab State (50,376 km~2) classified as the North Western State and known as the grain bowl of India. The Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India, has identified sixteen wetlands of Punjab, including the wetland of Kanjli, for conservation and management (Anon., 1988). Human habitations include Kapurthala town and Kanjli Village, situated a few kilometers from this wetland. This report summarizes observations made on the status of bird species in the Kanjli wetland and the threat of aquatic weeds/pollution affecting this fragile ecosystem.
