Common procedures for developing a bonsai from seedlings oryoung stock involve first inground or grow box growth, duringwhich the plant undergoes many trunk chops and cutbacks ofbranching to encourage back budding and to add movement to thetrunk as well as developing taper. Multiple sacrifice branches areencouraged in order to thicken the trunk. This period of allowinggrowth and then cutting it back is continued until the desired trunksize, taper, and movement are achieved. Later, once the growers' goals are met concerningthe trunk, taper, and movement, the plant istransferred to a training pot to define the nebari andcreate finer "feeder" roots while accustoming theplant to a container. During this period, ramificationand final branch placement are also begun. Finally,the plant is transferred into a bonsai pot where it willspend the remainder of its lifetime.
