Last summer I potted up the same variety of tomato plants in different types of pots to see if the pot Jmatorial affected the plant growth over an entire summer. Where we could obtain them we used a three-gallon sized pot to ensure that each plant had enough space. Each tomato plant was potted up using an identical mixture of 35% compost, 20% vermiculite, 20% potting soil (Promix BX) and 25% screened garden soil, except for the plant set in a bag of potting soil. Each plant was positioned in the greenhouse where it would not be shaded by other plants until May 15th (our last frost date). They were watered and fertilized identically throughout the growing season. In Early June (a rainy day) the pots were moved onto the stone patio and watered by rain or, when there was no rain, by water from the rain barrel. The plants were fertilized twice, once in early June when they were watered with Miracle Grow and again in early August with the same mixture.
