EFFECTIVENESS MONITORING BY CALIFORNIA COMMUNITY WATERSHED GROUPS

Watersheds provide primary ecosystem services taken for granted by water purveyors and users in delivering a continuous supply of clean water. Watershed, waterway, and riparian management and restoration are increasingly planned and implemented with the service involvement of watershed groups. In many cases, investments in these ecosystem and social services are small compared to the return society receives. As climate change and growing populations tighten the screws on managed water supplies, water managers can improve certainty and quality of these supplies through smart watershed management. Smart management, and in many cases restoration of watersheds, should involve intentional application of performance indicators in the context of adaptive management and decision-making. Because of increasing sophistication in the community of watershed restoration and monitoring groups, the groups are able to be involved in management decisions and environmental monitoring to determine management effectiveness.
