A fuselage resplendent in bright orange, blue, and white paintwork, and five-blade Hartzell propellers driven by turbines belie the age and history of this airplane. The cabin boasts shiny new aluminum and even the cockpit is as well-equipped as those of modern airliners. Given the name Polar 5, this 1943-vintage Douglas DC-3 reincarnated as a Basler Turbo-67 is the pride of scientists at Germany's Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) for Polar and Marine Research in Bremerhaven.
