Global demand for recovered fiber reached 70 percent in 2016, far surpassing the 60 percent recovery rate for fiber, DJ VanDeusen, Senior Vice President of Recycling Division for WestRock, told attendees at the Resource Recycling Conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota in a ses-sion on Market Demands. Fiber demand in North America is flat, whereas there is tenfold growth for fiber in China, he explained. Demand for fiber in North America has changed over time, with Old Corrugated Containers (OCC) use increasing from 46 percent in 1993 to 69 percent in 2016, and ONP declining from 21 percent to 4 percent for the same time period. Prices for OCC have jumped from an average of $92/ton in 2016 to an average of $l60/ton in 2017. OCC has been difficult to manage given the increased volatility in prices.
