Track your patient's oxygenation status with pulse oximetry

PULSE OXIMETRY IS used to noninvasively monitor SpO_2. A probe or sensor is attached to the fingertip, forehead, earlobe, or bridge of the nose. The sensor detects changes in oxygen saturation levels by monitoring light signals generated by the oximeter and reflected by blood pulsing through the tissue at the probe. We'll walk you through how to use pulse oximetry to measure your patient's SpO_2. Information at your fingertips Here's how to use a finger probe: ? Select a finger (usually the index finger) on your patient's nondominant hand for placement of the probe. Use the ear if she has compromised circulation in her arms or legs (see How to use an ear probe). 1. If she's wearing artificial nails, remove the nail from the test finger; if she's wearing nail polish, remove it. 2. Place the transducer probe over her finger so the light beams and sensors are opposite each other. If she has long fingernails, position the probe perpendicular to the finger or clip the fingernail. 3. Position her hand at heart level. 4. Turn on the power switch. A beep will sound, a display will light, and the pulse searchlight will flash. The pulse rate displays will show zeros.
