Substance P (SP) is an undecapeptide that belongs to the tachykinin family of pep-tides. The biological actions of tachykinins are mediated by three receptors, named neurokinin (NK)-l, NK-2and NK-3, showing theNK-1 receptor a preferential affinity for SP. After binding to the NK1 receptor (5, 15, 24), this neuropeptide regulates many biological functions and has been implicated in psychiatric disorders (e.g., depression) (6).
