The kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) is this year's news in F1 and British firms with a motorsport pedigree are leading the way in flywheel hybrid technology, which may prove a simple and cost effective method of hybridising road cars too. Now the F1 season is in full swing the opportunity has arisen to see KERS in action for the first time. It is part of the effort being made by the Federation Internationale de L'Automobile (FIA) to improve the sport's image in the eyes of environmentalists who, perhaps unfairly, view it as a crass abuse of the environment instead of the model of automotive engineering precision and fuel efficiency that it undoubtedly is.
