STUDY ON PSYCHOLOGICAL HEALTH OF CHINESE NURSES

[Objectives] To study the psychological health of nurses and improve their clinical nursing quality. [Methods] The nurses of five polyclinics were selected as a study group, whose working histories were longer than one year. The group was stratified by age and by the department where they work, The data on their psychological health state were collected by means of the Symptom Check List 90 (SCL-90). As the reference data served the results of a general population of Chinese women in SCL-90 (Chinese norm). [Results] All factorial scores and positive items of SCL-90 in the study group were higher than the control data, and the differences were statistically significant (P< 0.01). In the study group, interpersonal sensitivity, depres-sioh, anxiety, paranoid ideation and positive items in the age group 18-29 years and somatization in the group 40-49 years were higher than those of other groups (p<0.05). Interpersonal sensitivity and hostility of surgical nurses and obsession-compulsion of paediatric nurses were higher than those of the nurses in other departments, and the differences were statistically significant (p<0.05) [Conclusions] The psychological health of the nurses was poor, especially in the age groups '18-29' and '40-49' years. The psychological health problems of surgical and paediatric nurses were more severe than of other nurses We, therefore, recommended some improvements in care for the nurses by the hospital managements to help them in their stressful work.
