UKRAINE'S METALLURGY ENTERING THE THIRD MILLENNIUM

The article is the speech of Sergey Grischenkio, deputy State Secretary of the Industrial Policy Ministry of Ukraine, at the International Conference "Steel of the CIS and Eastern Europe" that was held in London, March 2003. The speaker talks on major macroeconomic indicators in Ukraine in 2002, increase in production of metallurgic raw stock and finished articles, production pattern, and novelties in legislation concerning the industry. Sergey Grischenko mentions higher consumption of metal in the country because of recovery in machine-building and construction sector. In the last year, Ukraine hit 8-years high in production of steel - 34.1 mn tons and took the 7~(th) position among the world largest steel manufacturers. Ukraine's portion in global output of steel made 3.8 percent. The speech also contains analysis of metal export from Ukraine, when overseas shipments consume more than 85 percent of all metal production in Ukraine. Other issues in consideration are global conjuncture of metal market along with outlooks for Ukraine's metal-making development.
