Farmers on the Yorkshire Wolds in Edwardian days generally used wagons drawn by two or more horses. Another generation would pass before the tractor took over the haulage and tillage. The horses were harnessed to a centre pole instead of using shafts. A driver would ride on the lead horse in postilion-fashion in the same way as the army drove its field guns or military wagons.
