Peter J. Longfoot tells of a simple but effective tracked conversion of the Fordson Model F. The idea of fitting a vehicle with tracks to lower its ground - pressure for a given weight predates both the steam and internal-combustion eras by a considerable number of years. Towards the end of the nineteenth century, the idea became practicable with the application of steam and oil engines as prime movers, and the crawler tractor became a viable proposition.
