CARAVAGGIO IS AN artist who is closely associated with the art of the Counter Reformation and with religious painting in general. The relationship between Caravaggio and the Catholic Church of the late 16th and early 17th centuries has always been an interesting avenue of research. Although much of his work deals with religious themes, Caravaggio was hardly eligible for sainthood. The artist, whose brief life is still somewhat shrouded in mystery, conducted himself with little regard for the rules of the state or the church.
