Four-year-old female with abdominal pain (case presentation)

A previously healthy four-year-old female was admitted to the inpatient unit of St John's Childrens' Hospital for abdominal pain. A few hours before her admission, she complained of severe abdominal pain and was taken to an urgent care free-standing facility where urinalysis showed pyuria with bacteria. She was diagnosed with presumptive urinary tract infection, prescribed sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim and eventually discharged home. Just after she returned home, the patient was not able to tolerate the first dose of oral antibiotic and had recurrent bouts of nonbloody, nonbilious emesis. Her persistent abdominal pain and emesis prompted her parents to bring her to the emergency department of St John's Hospital, and she was subsequently admitted.
