Tomato contracts in Greece still up in the air despite start of crop

THE Greek tomato harvest got under way this week in the certain knowledge that this year's yield will be seriously depleted, as reported previously (FOOD-NEWS 15 January). Current indications are that Greece's total processing harvest will not exceed850 000 tonnes, when it normally comes in at around one million tonnes. As a result of this, contracts are still under negotiation, when normally hy this time of year they would have been wrapped up. Greece has been beset by extreme weather this year, with bursts of rain earlier on in the season followed by scorching heat until just last week.
