Global liquorice popularity could see a downturn in independents

THE AMERICAN liquorice industry is witnessing a much-welcomed increase in sales during 2010 but, as leading manufacturers increase their presence, it could lead to some of the smaller independent companies being bought up by larger rivals or forced out in the future. Depending on the source of information, the overall sales for the liquorice industry were down 4-9% in 2009. However, volume appears to be showing a slight increase this year, a sign that the new products and premium items are giving themarket a boost. According to Symphony IRI data, the top 10 brands of liquorice in the US are; Twizzler licorice, Red Vines licorice, Twizzler Pull N Peel Licorice, Good & Plenty Licorice, Nibs Licorice, Wonka Kazoozles Licorice, Kennys Licorice, Darrell Lea Licorice, Switzers Licorice, and Bassetts Licorice.
