Carnival Unveils Diesel Emissions-Scrubbing Plan; Most Ships Get Retrofits by 2015

Miami-based cruise ship giant Carnival Corp. announced June 25 during its second-quarter 2013 earnings conference call that it plans a “full rollout” in 2014 of diesel emissions-scrubbing installations on ships operating in emissions control areas (ECAs). According to Carnival Chief Operating Officer Howard Frank, the decision to go forward with emissions scrubbing follows an earlier “successful” pilot project on one Carnival ship. The company now plans to install emissions scrubbers on two more ships later this year, followed by the “full rollout” in 2014, he said.
