DNV Unveiling Methanol Bunker-Fuel Rule

Norway-based ship risk-management consultancy Det Norske Veritas (DNV) announced June 5 that it will release on July 1 new classification rules for ships using “low flashpoint fuels,” such as methanol in place of conventional heavy fuel oil or marine distillate bunker fuels. “Interest for methanol as ship fuel is growing in response to the need to reduce NOX [nitrogen-oxide] and SOX [sulfur-oxide] emissions,” according to DNV. “However, with a flashpoint of just 12°C, it poses safety challenges, and DNV’s new notation, an industry-first, covers-every-aspect of safe design.”
