RISING feed costs in the dairy sector coupled with unpredictable weather are leading to a change in farmer mindset about their grassland.Rod Bonshor, the general manager at Oliver Seeds, said that farmers can no longer afford to leave land unmanaged."All the economic drivers point to the fact that people can't afford to have green fields that are underproductive," he said. "That awareness is being driven up by the cost of cereals, soya and other alternative feeds. Every time a feed wagon comes downthe drive there's a cost involved so farmers are looking more closely at what they can get out of their fields."
