摘要

Playing our Part is the latest review of mental health nursing and a call to action for the profession. The review was published by the Foundation for Nursing Studies and led by Emeritus Professor Tony Butterworth and Dr Theresa Shaw. It is over a decade since the last review of mental health nursing, From Values to Action, was published by the Chief Nursing Officer for England (Department of Health, 2006). The importance of relationships with service users, improving physical wellbeing, strengthening pre-registration education and supporting continuing professional development (GPD) are repeat themes. So what will be different with this latest review and what influence will it have on nurse leaders, workforce planners and the profession itself? That remains to be seen, and depends on how stakeholder organisations and nurses in clinical practice, management and research and academia respond to the six Step Changes set out in the review. These are based on a renewed alliance with people who need services and with experts by experience; a new focus for education; an employment strategy for graduate and registered nurses; research activity and graduate nursing; practice development and leadership (Figure 1).
