Cultural weed management of wild oats.

Cultural control techniques for wild oat (Avena spp.) management in South Australia are reviewed. Methods involving sanitation, soil cultivation and delayed crop planting are outlined, and their contributions in limiting weed growth considered. Techniques of enhancing crop competitiveness are discussed, together with the effects of fertilizer use and placement. The effects of windrowing, weed seed collection at harvest and crop stubble burning are also considered. The management of crop rotations and the contribution of allelopathy are discussed. The impact of cutting for hay or silage before seeding, green manuring and livestock grazing are also considered. Possible future lines of research are discussed.
