Chemical weed management of Vulpia spp. in Australia is reviewed. Problems posed by the resistance of the weed to the selective aryloxyphenoxypropionate and cyclohexanedione herbicides are outlined. Pre-plant. strategies are outlined, together withthose for weed control in cereals, grain legumes and oilseeds. No herbicides are currently registered for use in cereals, linseed or rape and potentially suitable products are discussed, including diuron or trifluralin +- oryzalin for pre-em. control in cereals and simazine and 2,2-DPA [dalapon-sodium] in rape. Successful control of the weed is achieved in grain legumes with triazines. In pastures, paraquat has been found to give variable results, and best results so far have been achieved with propyzamide + carbetamide (but costs are prohibitive) and simazine +- paraquat. The use of non-selective herbicides to prevent seed set is discussed, but the lack of synchrony in ear formation in major grass species is identified as a drawback for the technique.
