Major Resource Companies Accelerate Withdrawal from Thermal Coal Business

Major resource companies have accelerated the withdrawal from the thermal coal business against a background of the enhanced regulation of the global greenhouse gas emission. At the beginning, on June 1, South32 Limited, Australia sold all the coal assets in South Africa owned by the Company to Seriti Resources Holdings Proprietary Limited and withdrew from the thermal coal business, as a consequence of which Southw32’s coal business was consolidated into the metallurgical coal business in the Illawarra region in the State of NSW, Australia. South32 is now running Appin coal mine and Dendrobium coal mine in the Illawarra region. Both coal mines are an underground coal mine adopting a longwall (LW) mining method, and the flagship type of coal produced is hard coking coal.
