Brazil ferrous scrap exports climb 3% in 2020 despite pandemic

Sao Paulo—Despite the coronavirus pandemic, Brazilian ferrous scrap exports in 2020 increased 3% to 731,148 mt, the country’s economy ministry data showed Jan. 11. In December, exports decreased 75.1% from the same month in 2019. Compared to November, exports decreased 46.6% to 30,163 mt. The fall in scrap exports was due to a sudden increase in local demand and prices, pushed by a V-shaped recovery of the economy, in particular the construction sector, which spurred steel consumption and production cycles.
