Italy's Tenaris teams up with Edison, Snam to decarbonize Italian steel mill

London—A 20 MW electrolyzer is to be installed at Tenaris’ Dalmine steel mill in Italy to produce renewable hydrogen, project partners Tenaris, Edison and Snam said in a joint statement Jan. 11. Introduction of an electrolyzer fed by renewable electricity would see green hydrogen replacing natural gas in the steelmaking process, significantly reducing CO2 emissions related to electric arc furnace steel, the partners said. “The initiative may also include the construction of a storage site for the accumulation of high-pressure hydrogen and the use of oxygen, locally produced through electrolysis, within the smelting process,” they said.
