Single-Incision Laparoscopic Proctectomy Using a Magnet Retractor

A 30-year-old woman with medically refractory ulcerative colitis underwent a 3-stage pouch surgery with a single-incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) total abdominal colectomy and end ileostomy followed by a SILS completion proctectomy with IPAA with diverting loop ileostomy and subsequent loop ileostomy closure. A novel magnet retractor system (Levita Magnetic Surgical System, Levita Magnetics, San Mateo, CA) was used to lift the pelvic brim to facilitate deep pelvic dissection in the completion proctectomy. Thus, magnet retraction technology can be used to facilitate deep pelvic dissections with the benefit of avoiding any additional incisions particularly when using a SILS approach.
