摘要

Donald Trump attacked Mexico on two fronts during his election campaign. 1. First, he said he would build a wall along the border with Mexico and insisted that Mexico would pay for it-notwithstanding the high cost involved. Such a wall, it could be argued, would cut the flow of illegal migrants from Mexico to the USA and, in doing so, reduce the number of Mexicans occupying jobs which might otherwise be available for US citizens. 2. Second, not being content with reducing the number of Mexicans employed on US soil, Mr Trump also vowed to withdraw from the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta), which would have the effect of reducing employment opportunities in the Mexican textile and clothing industry. Donald Trump has repeatedly declared that Nafta is ‘the worst trade deal ever made’ and ‘very, very bad for our companies and for our workers’. A team to renegotiate the agreement has been established under the leadership of the US Trade Representative, Robert Lighthizer.
