For five generations, the Almond family has milled southern yellow pine in the town of Coushat-ta, but the tradition actually started a generation before that. Ardis Almond, now retired, tells the story of his great-great grandfather, Green Almond, serving the Confederate Army in the 14th North Carolina before losing an arm on the same day Stonewall Jackson lost his at Chancellorsville. A farmer, the one-armed Almond now had to find a new way of living after the injury. He decided to give the sawmillbusiness a try. He put the first Almond sawmill on a mountainside near the Pee Dee River in North Carolina.
