As might be expected all the larger builders are included and some smaller ones - including some who did not actually build new locomotives, like Coles Cranes and Thomas Smith, and others who only built locos for their own use, like the Lambton Engine Works. There is a brief introduction to the history of each firm, captions to the photographs and an Appendix listing the estimated total production by the principal companies.
