Canberra sees exports down but prices up

Australia has trimmed expectations for export volumes for iron ore and metallurgical coal but is more optimistic about prices than it had been three months earlier, according to the Resources and Energy Quarterly report released December 21 via the office of the country's chief economist. Australian government analysts now expect 2018 iron ore exports to have totalled 840 million mt, down 2% from the 858 million mt forecast it gave in the September edition of the report. The forecast slid throughout the year from as much as 874 million mt in the March quarterly update.
