Analysis: Iron ore supply set to rise in another volatile year

The recovery in China’s steel market lastyear drove demand for iron ore, withimports breaching the 1 billion mt barrierfor the first time. An additional 71 millionmt were imported in 2016, compared witha measly 20,000 mt in 2015, a year in whichcrude steel production went backwardsand steel prices plunged. Along with therestocking and stimulus-led recovery, ironore prices were also supported in 2016 bythe smallest volume of new seaborne tonsseen for many years.
