Using the S&P Global Platts cFlow trade data for iron ore, Platts has assessed the volumes of iron ore shipped from five of the major miners (Rio Tinto, BHP, Vale, Fortescue Metals Group, and Roy Hill) in April. It was observed that total shipments in April from all of the miners reached 80.94 million mt, up 7.9% on month but down 15.2% year on year. All the Australian miners saw big increases in April compared with the month before, while Brazilian miner Vale's volumes continued to drop and hit a new low in the month. Rio Tinto shipped 27.21 million mt from Port Dampier and Cape Lambert in April 2019, up 26.6% m-o-m and down 5.9% y-oy. The large increase reflected the fact the miner recovered volumes following Cyclone Veronica in March. This year's guidance for the miner's Pilbara shipments was revised to between 333 million and 343 million mt (previously it was between 338 million and 350 million mt), Rio's latest production report stated.
