Prices breach $300/mt on positive Turkish sentiment

Stronger steel production from Turkishelectric arc furnaces contributed to scrapprices rising $20/mt between mid-Februaryand mid-March to reach $300/mt CFRTurkey for the first time since May 2016.Indeed, scrap import prices have increasedby 30% since the start of February as millslifted output to capitalize on improvingdomestic demand for rebar and strongersteel exports. February started slowly,however, with the S&P Global Plattsmonthly average dipping by $6.50/mtfrom January to $265.85/mt. The SteelIndex’s (TSI) average for HMS 1&2 importsin February fell harder, by $11.40/mt to$262.60/mt.
