China shouldn't rush to add EAF capacity, conference hears

New electric arc furnace capacity in China should be added in a gradual, sustainable way, and companies should not rush into building them just because current government policy is favorable, an official at the China Metallurgical Industry Planning and Research Institute told a conference in eastern China's Hangzhou in November. "We shouldn't be giving too much early encouragement in rushing the development of EAFs or a higher reliance on steel scrap in place of iron ore," Jiang Xiaodong, president assistant of the institute, said. "EAF capacity expansions have been taking place at a fast pace recently, and this whole system is solely being supported by current policies."
