Effect of phytochemicals of cowpea leaves on survival and development of leafhopper, Empoasca kerri Pruthi.

Eight genotypes of cowpea viz., CS-88 as resistant, IC-202790A and EC-17574-6 as moderately resistant, EC-394838, HFC-42-1 and FS-68 as susceptible, V-240 and IC-5890 as highly susceptible to leafhopper were included to examine the influence of biochemical factors of leaves on development and survival of nymphs of leafhopper. Resistant genotypes viz., CS-88, IC-202790A and EC-17574-6 contained higher amounts of potassium (1.22-1.38%), tannin (0.94-1.05%), total phenol (3.5-3.98%) and iron (220.90-446.48 ppm) as compared to highly susceptible genotypes. Nymphal survival was 57.04 to 66.66% and leafhopper had taken 7.54-7.87 days to become adult on resistant genotypes. While susceptible genotypes viz., EC-394838, HFC-42-1, FS-68, V-240 and IC-5890 contained higher amounts of moisture (78.34-81.09%), chlorophyll (8.58-10.02%), nitrogen (1.77-2.57%), protein (11.10-16.06%), total sugar (5.44-7.85%) and zinc (36.81-45.46 ppm) than resistant genotypes. Nymphal survival was 77.04 to 86.67% and nymphal period was completed in 5.63 to 6.11 days on susceptible genotypes.
