Hot-rolled coil markets in the US saw some weakness mid-June as offers around $500/ st began to be widely available in the spot market. The daily S&P Global Platts TSI US HRC index stood at $505.25/st, and in spite of the softening, HRC prices were still up roughly $45/st from May 1, when they hit a four-year low. Although most integrated mills kept their offers firm at $540/st with their elevated HRC lead times, most mini-mills pushed their offers near $500/st as they were not able to extend their lead times. A Midwest service center source noted weak demand conditions. “Demand is weak overall and HRC is the weakest link,” the source said. He emphasized the negative impact of disappearing demand from tubing customers.
