摘要

Beyond Pro-life and Pro-choice: The Changing Politics of Abortion in Britain is an interesting and insightful book assessing political discourses surrounding abortion in the United Kingdom from the latter half of the twentieth century to date. In writing this book, a key aim of Fran Avery is to illustrate that the debates around abortion in UK politics in the lead-up to and passing of the Abortion Act 1967 and in subsequent years has not focused around pro-life verses pro-choice, as is so often assumed.1 Instead, her analysis clearly illustrates that, up until very recently, the abortion debate has revolved around conceptualisations of the role of medical professionals as gatekeepers of abortion, and of women who wish to access abortion.
