The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is a small Arab country that sits at a strategic military and commercial crossroads. For centuries, it has seen armies march and camel trains, laden with frankincense and spices, wind across its semi-arid desert landscape. As such, the country boasts many monuments, both constructed and natural. The country is politically stable and, in an area of much conflict, has shown continuing humanitarian concern and consideration for refugees from persecution, violence and poverty. Most of the indigenous population of just under 10 million people profess the religious identity of Sunni Islam.
