While Nigeria is trying to entice Shell into keeping its remaining joint venture acreage, it is a battle the country cannot win leaving the road open for smaller independents to fght over the spoils. Shell chief executive Ben van Beurden said that the company was in conversations with the Nigerian government on “a way to move forward” as problems with the onshore are not aligned with its energy transition strategy. However, he did say that it would re- main focussed on its deepwater and gas investments in the country.
