ArcelorMittal breaks ground on new EAF at AM/NS Calvert

ArcelorMittal USA has broken ground on the construction of a new EAF-based meltshop at AM/NS Calvert plant in Mobile, Alabama. The equipment will be designed to produce 1.5 million of slabs in a wide range of steel grades to feed a 5.3 million hot strip mill. This will optimise the slab sourc ing requirement and provide casting of slabs as well as the ability to hot charge slabs in the HSM, supporting Gen 3 production capability. The $775 million project, which is expected to be executed during 24 months, also includes an option to add further capacity at lower capex intensity, Metal Expert learnt from the company’s report.
