Mexico’s new energy safety agency starts work

Buenos Aires-Mexico’s new government agency that will oversee safety and envi- ronmental matters in the energy industry, ASEA, has begun work, the Environment Ministry said. The agency opened its doors Monday, the ministry said. It was created as part of last year’s energy reform legislation, which ended the 76-year state monopoly of Mexico’s oil industry and the near-monopoly of electric power. During that time, there was no special agency to handle environmental and safety issues.
