Weekly US coal production was at an estimated 13.55 million st in the week that ended September 21, down 2.3% from a week earlier and 9% lower than the year-ago week, US Energy Information Administration data showed Thursday. It was the sixth time in the last 16 weeks and 17th time this year that production in all four major basins were lower than the prior week. The total for Week 38 was 17.4% lower than the five-year average and was the lowest total for the corresponding week in the last 10 years. Despite the lower production, utility stockpiles remain higher on an aggregate basis, totaling an estimated 102.12 million st, as of September 19, up roughly 0.2% from a year earlier, according to S&P Global Platts Analytics.
