Fitch says Us ePa’s cO2 rule could have ‘short-lived’ impact on public utilities

The US Environmental Protection Agency’s scaled- back replacement for the Obama-era Clean Power Plan could allow some public utilities to delay the retirement of coal-fired generating capacity, Fitch Solutions analysts wrote in a Tuesday report. But the analysts said any increased flexibility under the Affordable Clean Energy (ACE) rule will be “short-lived” as cheaper natural gas-fired and renewable generation, state carbon dioxide targets, and consumer and investor decisions propel the US toward lower carbon dioxide emissions.
