Market sources question prices of 4.94 million mt thermal coal tender in Mexico

Mexico’s Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) concluded the purchase of 4.94 million mt of thermal coal at the start of the week, with producer-trader Glencore winning the tender, although market sources were skeptical regarding the reportedly high price at a time where global coal markets are almost uniformly bearish. The purchase was for thermal coal with a calorific value ranging from 5,800-6,200 kcal/kg GAR, to be delivered from April-November this year to the 2,778 MW Petalco power plant.
